UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL MISSOURI - MISSOURI SAFETY CENTER
The center has a team of twelve full-time staff charged with the technology transfer of safety programming for the state of Missouri. The Missouri Safety Center has been a partner and prime contractor for the Missouri Division of Highway Safety since 1967. The Safety Center has four basic charges in its mission statement, the first of which is Instruction, comprising about eighty percent of the Center's activities. Additionally, the Safety Center is charged with Research Publications and Public Service. The Missouri Safety Center has been fortunate to have had only three directors in the past twenty-nine years. Dr. Robert L. Marshall was the Center's first director from its founding in 1967 until 1980. He was followed by Dr. Robert L. Baldwin from 1980 to 1991. Upon Dr. Baldwin's retirement in 1991, the University appointed Dr. Leanna Depue as the Director, who remains in that position. The Missouri Safety Center is housed on the main campus of the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, and resides in a 3,000 square foot suite directly on the University's quadrangle. In addition, the Missouri Safety Center operates the Highway Safety Instructional Park, including the Highway Safety Building, located just south of the main campus on 17 acres of land. The Highway Safety Instructional Park is also the location for the training laboratories of the Missouri Safety Center. The Highway Safety Building houses the statewide motorcycle program, the training center for traffic law enforcement training and the State's Breath Alcohol Instrument Training Lab. In support of its statewide training mission, the Safety Center maintains a service vehicle fleet of 110 vehicles. The Missouri Safety Center is one of the leading providers in law enforcement training for the state of Missouri, specializing in the reporting and investigation of traffic crashes, including accident reconstruction, pedestrian reconstruction and in 1997, commercial vehicle reconstruction. In addition, the Missouri Safety Center acts as secretariat for four other national and two statewide associations. The Missouri Safety Center has provided training for over 300,000 people in the past 28 years', has administered over 15 million dollars in projects and has handled public demonstrations for over one million citizens. The greatest strength of the Missouri Safety Center is its people and their commitment to safety. |
