South Carolina Highway Patrol
The South Carolina Highway Patrol was formed in 1930 to enforce newly enacted laws governing the use of motor vehicles in this state. This new agency began with 69 men, including a Captain, an Assistant Captain, 11 License Inspectors, 7 Lieutenants and 49 Patrolmen.
Each Trooper was issued a badge, gun, uniform, motorcycle and summons book. They began patrolling the 5,991 miles of SC highways at that time.
Today we are still a growing agency committed to the safety of all South Carolinians and those who travel our highways. We now have over 900 Troopers patrolling over 64,750 miles of highway.
The Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) was formed in 1994. Its purpose is to provide thorough investigations of complex and fatal collisions. MAIT Troopers specialize in forensics and vehicle dynamics as well as highway engineering and design to assist in even the most complicated collisions. They are highly trained in all aspects of investigation and reconstruction. MAIT also instructs other Troopers and Law Enforcement Officers in all areas of the state.
From detailed mapping and animations to data imaging from crash data recorders, MAIT uses the latest technology and equipment in accident reconstruction and investigation. A Research and Development Committee ensures that modern technology and techniques are introduced quickly in order to benefit all investigations. The Special Response Unit is comprised of MAIT Troopers prepared to respond immediately to any part of the state. The members of this Unit bring specific expertise to extraordinary and high profile collisions.
By using these techniques and technology, MAIT strives daily to provide the best investigation possible. This information is not only used for prosecution, but can also be used to reduce the overall number of collisions and fatalities throughout the state.
