WASHINGTON ASSOCIATION OF TECHNICAL ACCIDENT INVESTIGATORS

WATAIIn September 1979, six police officers who had just graduated from Northwestern University's three-week long Technical Motor Vehicle Accident investigation course got together in a restaurant to discuss what they had just learned. They shared a desire to continue their education in the field of Traffic Accident Investigation. The concept of a professional association with the goal of continuing education through programs and presentations by specialists in the field and the sharing of information between investigators took shape.

On November 14. 1979, the charter meeting of WATAI was held. It was a great success with 41 people in attendance, 33 of whom became charter members. That meeting made WATAI the first formal organization of its kind in the world!

Since that first meeting, WATAI has grown to a membership of over 200 people. Meeting twice a year, WATAI still hosts presentations and conducts testing specific to what has now become the Traffic Accident Reconstruction (TAR) discipline. Always interested in new developments in the TAR field, WATAI willingly underwrote the cost of sending a member to the first meeting and all subsequent meetings of what has developed into ACTAR, thus becoming one of ACTAR's founding organizations.
